Equitable Transit-Oriented Communities

We foster a vision of equitable transit-oriented communities

in which leaders and practitioners work with local communities to determine how transit, mobility and development investments can advance local goals for economic development and access to affordable housing, jobs, education, food, green space and overall quality of life.

We make the case that the best future for cities and regions  - and quality of life for the people who live there - comes from providing sustainable mobility and access to opportunity delivered by transit and related development.

Drawing on examples from around North America and the world, we point to all the ways that communities built around transit — communities designed to be walkable, affordable, with multiple mobility options and key destinations in reach by frequent and reliable transit — are positioned to be safer and more sustainable, to thrive.

We constantly refine and seek to improve the approach to building equitable transit-oriented communities (ETOC).

We share innovative policies and tools for achieving more equitable outcomes from transit and development investments. We push for processes that allow communities to define their needs and shape how transit and development projects can advance community-defined goals.

This is an iterative process. Through our programs, our network shares new approaches to land use, transit, mobility and development policies, planning, design, projects, implementation and operation, as well as to the community engagement that is essential for outcomes to truly serve existing and new residents. We identify successes and shortcomings, looking for the ways that approaches need to change to achieve better results for people, cities and regions. We continually refine what it means to build more equitable transit-oriented communities – better places for all to live.
