Tamar Shapiro
Chief Executive Officer
Tamar Shapiro is a nonprofit leader with extensive experience in community development and transportation.
Since joining Mpact, Shapiro has guided the organization (formerly known as Rail~Volution) through a rebranding process, launched innovative place-based programming, and fostered new partnerships at the intersection of transit and community development.
Previously, Shapiro served as Senior Manager of Strategic Initiatives at the New Urban Mobility Alliance, where she focused on increasing equitable access through new mobility and helped launch a pilot to provide micromobility options to essential workers during the pandemic. From 2012 to 2017, Shapiro was President and CEO of the Center for Community Progress, the preeminent national organization on strengthening neighborhoods through the reuse of vacant or deteriorated properties.
A lawyer by training, Shapiro started her career as an affordable housing attorney and has also served as Senior Director of Urban and Social Policy with the German Marshall Fund of the United States, as well as Director of the Governors’ Institute on Community Design.
